Cambodia’s capital before Phnom Penh, its hilltop now crowned with royal stupas visible for miles across the plains. Climb the staircases early, eat at the food stalls below, and detour to the Vipassana meditation centre if the day allows.
Half day
A small Angkorian temple complex with carvings that reward slow looking, next to a lake lined with picnic platforms. It is where Phnom Penh families spend Sunday: go on a weekday and you may have the twelfth century to yourself.
Full day
Cambodia’s first national park swaps rice plains for pine forest, cool air and waterfall pools. About two hours out, best with a driver, and the strangest micro-climate in the country: bring a layer.

Koh Dach (Silk Island): fifteen kilometres, a short ferry, and a completely different pace. Half a day covers it, by tuk-tuk or on a guided cycling tour.
Yes, it is the most atmospheric half-day out of the capital: royal stupas on a hill, plains views, and a proper Cambodian lunch scene at the base. Combine it with Phnom Baset or the meditation centre to fill the day.
Yes, with an early start and a driver: about two hours each way. If the pine forest tempts you to linger, the park has resorts and campsites for a slow version.
