The outline in our public brochure: temples, capital, then a southern pause. An example to adapt around your dates.
Our public travel brochure sketches ten days across Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Kampot–Kep. The interesting part is not the list of names. It is why these places sit together and what would make us change them for a particular traveller.
This article follows the sample route in our public brochure. We use it to show how we plan a trip; dates, accommodation and transport still need choosing.
The brochure gives Siem Reap and Angkor days 1–4, Phnom Penh days 5–6, and Kampot–Kep days 7–10. Travel between the stops is included in those ten days.
The thread is contrast: temples and a base in Siem Reap, the capital's energy and history, then a slower southern section. It is one possible direction. Arrival airports, departure times, season and priorities can change the order or remove a stop.
Before turning it into a personal itinerary, we would count the actual nights and identify where the final night belongs. A departure from Phnom Penh needs a feasible return from the south; the brochure's southern section cannot be read as a promise of a full coastal day followed by any flight you choose.
A base reduces the repeated work of packing, checking out and finding the next room. It also gives room for different kinds of days. Siem Reap is not only a place to sleep between temples: the town, food and countryside can have their own place in the stay.
In our brochure's Angkor example, the morning centres on Angkor Wat and the afternoon can be a pause in town or at the accommodation. Bayon and Ta Prohm are left for another day. That pace leaves room to enjoy the temples without filling the entire afternoon.
A traveller who wants depth at Angkor and one who wants a short introduction need different plans. Our Angkor comparison gives the public starting points.
Phnom Penh introduces a different part of Cambodia. It brings city life and another perspective on the country’s history. We would choose the visits according to the people travelling and the time that is genuinely available after the transfer.
If someone strongly prefers countryside to cities, that preference matters. If flights already require a capital-city stay, it makes sense to use it thoughtfully. The personalised work is deciding which version serves the traveller rather than treating every stop as compulsory.
To add Koh Rong, we would extend the trip or remove another stop. An island adds the journey to the port, the sailing and the connection to the accommodation. It also needs a sensible return before the international flight.
If the beach is the main reason for travelling, we might replace another section rather than simply extend everything. If dates are short, the mainland coast and an island are not interchangeable without changing the logistics. Read our guide to choosing stops before deciding.
