Siem Reap gives you Angkor, craft, a slower town rhythm and countryside excursions. Phnom Penh offers museums, the Royal Palace, markets, neighbourhoods and a denser dining scene. The question is rarely which city is “better”; it is how to allocate scarce nights without spending the trip in transit.

Keep three or four nights if you want two park days plus a day for Siem Reap itself, or an outing to Kulen, Beng Mealea or Tonlé Sap. Two nights can accommodate a full city day if arrival and departure times cooperate. Add a third when you want a museum morning, a different neighbourhood in the afternoon and time to explore food without a strict schedule. The route between the cities costs a substantial part of a day by road. A flight has a short time in the air but still requires travel to and from airports, check-in and buffers. Compare current options on our routes page, and avoid treating an arrival or departure day as a full sightseeing day.
If flights allow, enter Cambodia in one city and leave from the other. It can save a return transfer. If you have only three nights and a long international journey, adding both cities may produce two shallow visits.
