Sept lieux à visiter au Cambodge au-delà d’Angkor

Angkor may anchor a first trip to Cambodia, but it does not have to define the whole itinerary. Beyond Siem Reap are southern islands, communities on Tonlé Sap, forested highlands and wildlife associated with the Mekong.

The seven places below are spread across the country. Use them as possible extensions to an Angkor itinerary rather than as a single checklist: the right choices depend on which direction you travel next and how much time you have.

1. Koh Rong Sanloem for an island extension

Koh Rong Sanloem puts beaches, sea and jungle into an itinerary otherwise dominated by cities and temples. It is off Cambodia’s southern coast, so it makes most sense when your route already includes Sihanoukville or another coastal destination.

The island’s bays do not offer identical experiences. Decide where you intend to stay before arranging transport, and verify current ferry departure points, operators and seasonal conditions directly before travelling.

Add it if: you want several slower days by the water and can dedicate part of the trip to southern Cambodia.

2. Tonlé Sap for life shaped by water

Tonlé Sap offers a different reason to remain around Siem Reap. Its floating and waterside settlements show how homes and everyday routines adapt to a lake whose water level changes dramatically with the seasons.

A village visit should not be treated as a generic sightseeing excursion. The appropriate destination, route and visitor conditions can vary, so check current access and choose an arrangement that respects residents rather than assuming every settlement operates in the same way.

Add it if: you want an excursion that fits naturally beside Siem Reap without adding another temple day.

3. Yeak Laom for a northeastern landscape

Yeak Laom is a near-circular crater lake outside Banlung in Ratanakiri, surrounded by dense forest. Its setting is markedly different from Cambodia’s central plains and southern coast.

The lake works best as part of a wider northeastern route rather than as an isolated detour. Banlung is the practical base to investigate when deciding whether Ratanakiri fits your available time.

Add it if: the northeast is already part of your plans and you value forest and freshwater scenery more than a fast, tightly packed itinerary.

4. Kirirom for pine forest and cooler highland scenery

Kirirom National Park is known for a highland landscape of pine trees, grass and dirt paths—scenery many first-time visitors do not associate with Cambodia.

Its position in Kampong Speu makes it more compatible with a Phnom Penh-based route than the distant northeastern highlands. Current access and local conditions should still be checked before departure. For a broader comparison, see our guide to Cambodia’s national parks.

Add it if: you want a nature-focused break while keeping the itinerary centred on Phnom Penh and the southwest.

5. The Cardamom Mountains for a longer southwest journey

The Cardamom Mountains stretch across southwestern Cambodia, with forest, ridgelines and long road sections through sparsely settled country. This is not a single roadside attraction: choosing the Cardamoms means choosing a route, base or organised stay within a large region.

Plan this section around confirmed transport, accommodation and fuel availability. Conditions can differ substantially between corridors, and a generic photograph of mountain scenery is not enough to identify a suitable route.

Add it if: you have time for a dedicated southwest leg and are prepared to plan the logistics in advance.

6. Phnom Sampeau for the evening bat flight

At Phnom Sampeau, outside Battambang, visitors gather below a cave to watch a dense stream of bats emerge around dusk.

This is the easiest choice here to combine with time in Battambang. Treat the timing as approximate, however, and confirm current viewing arrangements locally rather than building a tight connection around a fixed hour.

Add it if: Battambang is already on your route and you want a wildlife experience that does not require a separate regional detour.

7. Kratie for Irrawaddy dolphins and the Mekong

The Mekong near Kratie is associated with rare Irrawaddy dolphins. It also gives travellers a reason to follow the river north instead of returning directly between Phnom Penh and Siem Reap.

Because this is a sensitive wildlife experience, confirm current viewing locations, access and conservation guidance before booking anything. Select an arrangement that follows responsible viewing practices and does not promise a sighting.

Add it if: you are travelling through eastern Cambodia and accept that wildlife encounters are never guaranteed.

How to choose the right extension

For the smallest change to a first-time itinerary, consider Tonlé Sap alongside Siem Reap or Phnom Sampeau alongside Battambang. Both can be evaluated within routes many travellers already use.

For a southern contrast, choose Koh Rong Sanloem. Kirirom is better suited to travellers keeping close to Phnom Penh and Kampong Speu, while the Cardamoms require a more deliberate southwest plan.

Yeak Laom and Kratie belong to longer eastern or northeastern itineraries. They can complement one another geographically, but they should not be described as quick additions until current transport and road conditions have been checked.

Trying to include all seven would produce a long, fragmented journey. For most first visits, one nearby excursion and one substantial regional extension will create a broader picture of Cambodia without turning the trip into a race.
