Kampot is the rare town where the day trips are as good as the town itself: a ghost hill station in the clouds, the world’s most famous pepper, temples inside caves and an island twenty minutes offshore.
The shortlist
Full day
A smooth road climbs a kilometre above the coast to the eerie remains of a French hill station: the old casino, a red-roofed Catholic church in the mist, viewpoints over the gulf and a giant seated Buddha. Weather changes by the minute up top: that is half the point.
Half day
Kampot pepper carries protected-origin status, and the farms around the Secret Lake, La Plantation the best known, walk you through vines, drying tables and tastings that will ruin supermarket pepper for you forever.
Half day
Phnom Chhnork hides a brick temple from the Funan era inside a limestone cave reached through rice paddies; Phnom Sorsia adds bat caves and karst viewpoints. Local kids will offer to guide: a few thousand riel well spent.
Full day
Crab at Kep’s market, then a twenty-minute boat to an island of hammocks, simple shacks and water the temperature of soup. The Kep side of the day belongs in our Kep guide.

Good to know
The road is excellent, but it climbs about 1,000 metres: an automatic scooter with a passenger will struggle. Solo on a decent bike is fine; otherwise take a car or join a tour.
La Plantation by the Secret Lake is the most visitor-ready, with free guided tours and tastings. Smaller family farms nearby are quieter and equally genuine: the loop road lets you sample both.
As a day trip it is ideal: beach, lunch shack, hammock, boat home. Staying over means very basic bungalows and generator hours, charming for some, spartan for most.
