After Angkor, what appeals to you? A few beach days, time in the countryside, or the cafes and museums of Phnom Penh? The places you add will give the trip a different feel.

For a first trip, start with two experiences you most want, then choose the stops that deliver them. Keep the places where you actually want to spend time.

Choose by what you want to do

If this matters mostStart your research hereThe trade-off to consider
Angkor and time beyond the templesSiem ReapRepeated early starts can leave little energy for town
City life, food and historical contextPhnom PenhChoose visits thoughtfully rather than collecting monuments
Countryside and a different urban rhythmBattambangThe extra connection needs a place in the route
River time, pepper country and the coastKampot and KepChanging hotels between nearby bases may be unnecessary
Beach daysKoh Rong or Koh Rong SamloemFerry and final hotel transfers reduce the time actually on the beach
Highlands and natureMondulkiriA distant stop needs enough time and a suitable activity plan

To explore further, our Cambodia guide introduces the destinations; the route guide shows how they connect.

What we would protect at Siem Reap

If Angkor is the reason for coming, protect the energy to enjoy it. Do not make every day a temple marathon. A quieter afternoon in town or at your accommodation belongs in the trip just as much as another visit.

Our Angkor guide helps choose the depth of the temple stay. Once that is clear, use the Siem Reap guide for the existing local selection. You do not need to move hotels to make the days feel different.

What a second base should add

Choose contrast. Phnom Penh brings a capital-city experience; Battambang changes the urban and countryside setting; Kampot and Kep can create a slower southern section. These contrasts can make a varied trip without crossing the whole country.

Write one sentence for each proposed stop: “We are going here because…” If two answers are almost identical and time is short, keep the stop that fits the route better. For the two main cities, our guide to dividing nights goes into more detail.

Islands: choose the bay before the room

Even on the same island, the atmosphere and access change from beach to beach. Start with the atmosphere and access you want, then check where the accommodation sits.

Confirm the ferry destination and the final transfer directly with the hotel. Look at what a travel day removes from a short stay and preserve flexibility for changed sailings. Our Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem guides will help you choose your stretch of beach.

When a detour deserves more time

The highlands and more distant nature stops can be central to a trip. They become less convincing when squeezed into the space left after every other destination. First identify the experience you want there, check its actual operating conditions, then allocate the journey and recovery time.

Our month-long motorcycle journey shows the variety we encountered. For a two-week holiday, choose a section of that loop to suit your transport and the season.

The final cut

Before booking, put arrival and departure points on the same page as your proposed bases. Count nights, mark transfer days and identify the most fragile connection. If you cannot see where an ordinary relaxed day fits, remove something before adding more detail.

For broad duration examples, compare 10 and 14 days. For the reasoning behind a shorter outline, read our brochure example. If you would rather have us make these trade-offs around your own dates and interests, Plan My Trip explains the personalised service and separate planning fee.
