Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem or Koh Sdach: Which Cambodian Island Should You Choose?

The most important island decision is not your hotel. It is the bay, beach or village where you will arrive. Koh Rong, Koh Rong Samloem and Koh Sdach suit different trips, and an imprecise arrival choice can add an awkward final transfer.

The short version: choose Koh Rong for range, Koh Rong Samloem for a slower rhythm and Koh Sdach for community and archipelago life. In every case, confirm the exact arrival point with both the boat operator and your accommodation before paying.

Koh Rong: choose the bay before the hotel

Koh Rong is the most varied of the three choices. The Cambodia Tourism Board describes more than twenty beaches and four communities, including Koh Touch, Prek Svay and Sok San. That variety is the island’s strength, but it also means “Koh Rong” is not a precise enough destination for a transfer.

Koh Touch is the practical choice for travellers who value a concentration of services and activity. Long Set, Sok San and quieter areas suit different stays and may use different piers or onward transfers. Ask the accommodation for the exact pier name and pickup instructions before buying the ferry.

Koh Rong Samloem: slower, but still bay-specific

Koh Rong Samloem—also commonly written Koh Rong Sanloem—is a natural choice when the beach should set the pace of the day. Saracen Bay is the main beach base, while M’Pai Bay has a stronger village character.

The bays are not interchangeable. Some western or isolated beaches need an additional transfer arranged by the accommodation. Do not assume that a ferry stopping somewhere on the island reaches the beach where you are staying, or that walking between bays with luggage is realistic.

Koh Sdach: community and archipelago

Koh Sdach belongs to Koh Kong Province and the name can refer to the island, its village and the surrounding archipelago. The Cambodian government’s coastal tourism programme places Koh Sdach within the wider coastal belt alongside Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem.

The experience is less resort-led than the best-known parts of Koh Rong. It suits travellers who value an inhabited fishing community and are comfortable coordinating a less standard journey.

Current directions published by Koh Apikjun Resort send guests by road to the Koh Sdach mainland pier at Poy Japan and ask them to coordinate the boat arrival. Treat that as one accommodation’s current instruction, not a universal timetable: your own accommodation must confirm the exact mainland meeting point, boat and island arrival.

Compare boats, piers and final transfers

Koh Rong and Koh Rong Samloem have boat services from Sihanoukville, but routes and island stops are not interchangeable. Tourism Cambodia’s current boat directory is a useful starting point for operator names, not a substitute for confirming the precise sailing.

Before booking, get clear answers to four questions:

1. Which mainland terminal does the boat leave from?
2. What is the exact name of the island pier?
3. Is the route direct, or does it stop elsewhere first?
4. How do you travel from the arrival pier to the accommodation?

For Koh Sdach, add a fifth question: who coordinates the local boat and what happens if the road transfer arrives late? Avoid building a same-day international flight or other fixed connection immediately after any island return.

Visit with less impact

Koh Rong lies within a marine national park, and the surrounding coast includes reefs, fisheries and communities whose everyday life is not staged for visitors. The World Bank’s Cambodia protected-areas assessment identifies the importance of ethical, sustainable marine tourism.

Carry waste back when disposal is uncertain, avoid touching or standing on coral, use operators that explain wildlife and reef rules, and ask before photographing people around homes or working boats.

Which Cambodian island fits your trip?

Choose Koh Rong if you want the broadest range of beaches and facilities and are willing to research the correct part of the island.

Choose Koh Rong Samloem if a slower beach stay is the priority. Decide on the bay before comparing rooms.

Choose Koh Sdach if the fishing community and archipelago are central to the appeal. It asks for more coordination and flexibility, which is part of what makes it distinct.
