BEYOND SIEM REAP
Water, stone & sacred ground.
Beyond Angkor, a mountain where forest shelters waterfalls, carved riverbeds and places of pilgrimage. Discover another side of the Siem Reap region.
Discover the regionA DIFFERENT HORIZON
Angkor’s temples tell only part of Siem Reap’s story. On the Kulen plateau, it continues in sandstone, beneath the trees and along the river. Come for the waterfalls and discover a mountain with a special place in Khmer spiritual life.
Give this discovery room in your stay: time to leave the city, climb to the plateau and enjoy being there without rushing.
FIND YOUR BEARINGS
Find the plateau in relation to Siem Reap, then look closer at the waterfalls and sanctuary. These landmarks help you understand the area; they are not a hiking itinerary.

THE ESSENCE OF KULEN

The waterfalls are Kulen’s best-known sight. Between the two levels, rocks, trees and resting places invite you to linger. The landscape and flow change with the seasons.
Before you go
Carvings in the riverbed appear through the water. Look without stepping on or touching the reliefs. Light and the river’s changing level are part of the experience.
A different site from Kbal Spean, which has a separate approach.
PREAH ANG THOM
At Preah Ang Thom, the reclining Buddha and the gestures of worshippers remind you that this is a living sanctuary. Cover shoulders and knees, remove shoes where requested and give people space to worship.

BEYOND THE WATERFALLS
Kulen’s forest and villages form part of a much wider archaeological landscape. Arrange visits away from the main sights with a local guide: a point on a map cannot tell you whether a path is accessible or in good condition.
Kulen is associated with Mahendraparvata, an ancient Khmer capital. Archaeological research continues to illuminate its landscape.

Allow around two hours on the road each way from Siem Reap, depending on your starting point and road conditions. Set aside a day and agree on travel between sights, waiting time and the return with your driver.
Food and water are sold near Preah Ang Thom; toilets are reported at the pagoda. Facilities are spread out. Bring cash from town and save a screenshot of the map and your driver’s number: mobile reception can be patchy.
Rain can strengthen the waterfalls and make steps slippery; flow falls in the dry season. Weekends and holidays are also popular with Cambodian visitors. Choose a weekday if you prefer a quieter visit.
Grippy shoes, water, sun/rain protection, swimwear, a towel and dry clothes. Bring clothing that covers shoulders and knees for the sanctuary, even if you plan to swim. Take your rubbish home.
No. Kbal Spean also has riverbed carvings, but is a different site with a separate approach. The river shown here is near Preah Ang Thom and the Kulen waterfalls.
It depends on your visit. A driver and a guide serve different purposes. For trails and sites away from the main visitor areas, arrange a local guide and confirm access.
Some parts involve stairs, uneven surfaces and wet rocks. If you are travelling with young children or have accessibility needs, check the conditions at each stop before booking.
The visitor information consulted lists free entry for children under 12, with a passport required as proof of age at the checkpoint. Confirm this before buying. Free admission does not mean free transport or a free excursion.
A car or minivan with a driver lets you agree on the ascent and return. If starting by tuk-tuk, establish before booking which vehicle will handle the climb and travel on the plateau, and whether a transfer costs extra.
Swimming depends on conditions that day and instructions on site. Do not assume it will be possible: flow, depth and slippery rocks can change. Plan to enjoy the waterfalls even if you stay out of the water.
