Cambodia Transport: Bus, Private Driver or Flight?

Compare transport by door-to-door time, group cost and the day it leaves you, rather than headline fares alone.

Compare door to door.

Time on board is only one part of travelling. Look at the complete chain before choosing your transport.

  1. First hotel

    Check out

  2. Reach departure

    Station, airport or stop

  3. Allow for waiting

    Check-in and buffer

  4. Make the journey

    The main travel leg

  5. Reach your hotel

    The final connection

Shared bus

Per-person fare, exact stops and a departure that fits.

Private car

Whole-group price, luggage and agreed stops.

Domestic flight

The real time saved after airport transfers and check-in.

Sequence diagram, not a time scale. For an island, include the sea crossing and confirm the pier and onward hotel connection.

The fastest vehicle does not always give you the most useful day. A short flight includes two airport transfers and check-in; a shared bus has fixed departure and arrival points; a private car may let you leave from your accommodation. Compare the complete journey before choosing.

You also do not need one transport style for the whole holiday. A mixture can suit a Cambodia trip better than insisting on buses, flights or a driver for every move.

Match the choice to the constraint

Bus or shared minivanThe timetable fits and the fare matters mostExact stations, luggage, seating and total time
Private car with driverPickup flexibility, several passengers or luggage change the calculationVehicle, capacity, inclusions, agreed stops and cancellation
Domestic flightA currently operating route saves useful time door to doorAirports, schedule, baggage and transfers
TrainThe ride itself interests you and the current timetable fitsOperating days, stations and onward transport

Use our routes and connections for route-specific information and verify your selected departure with the operator. You will find journey times and options for each connection there.

Count the whole travel day

Write down five parts: leaving the hotel, reaching the departure point, waiting, the main journey, and reaching the next hotel. Then ask what you can reasonably enjoy after arrival.

For a flight, compare the time saved after airport travel and check-in. For a bus, check whether the named city stop is close to your accommodation. For a private car, agree whether you are buying a direct transfer or a longer journey with stops. Those are different services.

The same logic applies to cost. A fare per passenger and a quote per vehicle cannot be compared until you put the same number of travellers, bags and transfers into both totals. See our whole-trip budget examples.

When a private driver is useful

A car can be worth considering for an awkward departure time, a group travelling together or a journey where agreed stops matter. Ask for the actual vehicle arrangement and whether the quote includes fuel, tolls, parking, waiting and any driver overnight costs.

A driver is not automatically a licensed guide. If you want interpretation at Angkor, ask for that service explicitly. For children, confirm suitable restraints rather than assuming the vehicle will have them.

For one isolated ride, start with our private transfer service. You do not need a complete travel-planning package simply to arrange a transfer.

Islands need a final connection

The Map's island advice starts with the bay and arrival pier. A ferry ticket to the right island can still leave you on the wrong side for your hotel. Ask the accommodation which sailing and pier make sense and how the last section works with luggage.

Keep a mainland buffer before an international departure. Weather and operating changes can affect sailings; a connection that works on a timetable is not a guarantee. Confirm the operator's conditions and the hotel's arrangements for a changed arrival.

A transport combination can be simpler

Imagine a couple comfortable with a shared service between cities but wanting a private pickup after a late arrival. A bus can suit the journey between cities while a car makes arrival easier. A family with several bags may make another choice, even on the same route.

Our own month-long motorcycle trip is a different travel style again, not a default recommendation for visitors. If riding interests you, read the separate motorbike guide before choosing that approach.

Decide what you need help with

If your cities and dates are already fixed, you may only need to compare a few connections. If changing one journey means moving several hotel nights, look again at the order of your stops.

With Plan My Trip, we bring the stages, transport options and daily programme into a personalised plan. Planning fees and any optional contact package are separate from transport fares, which you pay to the providers. Begin with the service description, then use the existing questionnaire if you want a quote.
