Seeing elephants in Mondulkiri: choose the experience and plan your stay

Compare Elephant Valley Project and Mondulkiri Project: visitor contact, walking and logistics for an elephant experience from Sen Monorom.

Mondulkiri takes time to reach. If elephants are the reason for going, choose the experience before fixing your hotel nights. Two similar names often appear in searches: Elephant Valley Project and Mondulkiri Project. They are separate organisations with different visitor-contact policies.
Elephant Valley Project takes visitors into the forest to observe elephants. Its programme excludes tourist rides, performances, visitor feeding and swimming with the animals.
We would start here if your aim is to watch the elephants rather than seek close physical interaction. Understanding the work of the people who care for them is part of the experience.
The full-day “Ele Lover” programme is advertised at USD 100 per foreign visitor, including VAT. It includes transport from Sen Monorom, lunch and two observation hikes. The operator lists 5–8 km of walking across the day, so this is not a visit where a vehicle takes you straight to the animals.
Bookings are offered Sunday to Friday. Confirm your chosen session before arranging transport to Mondulkiri.
Mondulkiri Project advertises a USD 50 day visit with lunch, departing from Sen Monorom. It prohibits elephant riding but offers feeding and time near a waterfall with the elephants.
That differs substantially from EVP. Look beyond the word “sanctuary” and the headline price: ask exactly what contact is included and what you may decline.
We recommend arriving in Sen Monorom the previous day. This avoids making a morning departure depend on a long road journey that same day. Staying another night after the forest visit also allows a more relaxed onward departure.
A third night can provide time for another outing or some flexibility. It is not essential: compare the time on the ground with the travel days, particularly if you are already visiting several distant regions.
Ask about gradients, trail conditions and whether a walk can be shortened. A moderate distance can feel demanding in heat or on slippery ground. Do not assume that every programme offered by an operator has the same minimum age.
For families, the question is not simply whether children are allowed, but whether this particular day suits your group.
Confirm the meeting point, inclusions, contact policies and cancellation terms. Bring suitable shoes, water as advised by the organiser and protection from showers.
